Day Trips From London

London is a great place to visit and a great place to base yourself if you are looking to see a little more of England. Here are five of the best day trips from London.

Windsor

Best known for the sweeping immensity of Windsor Castle, the town itself is no less impressive. Walk, bus, or cycle through the streets of old, visiting local attractions or shopping in everything from corner markets to high-end boutiques. Enjoy a visit to one of Windsor’s many theme parks (including Legoland!) or experience a taste of history through its castles, landmarks, and guildhalls. For the truly daring, take a deep breath and climb aboard the Royal Windsor Wheel – a 55-meter ferris wheel that offers a 360 degree view of Windsor Castle and the River Thames.

Whether you’re looking for an exciting adventure or a relaxing getaway, a day trip to Windsor should be planned carefully. There’s so much to do and so little worth missing!

Cambridge

With so much to see and do, It is no surprise that Cambridge has just been voted the 4th top UK holiday destination.

And of course the highlight for any visitor is a poke around the world famous university which keeps the city invested in rugby and rowing. You wouldn’t be out of place if you decided to paint yourself blue and run down the streets – it’s showing team spirit, after all!

If public attention isn’t your thing, consider getting lost in the many shops and restaurants and don’t forget all the annual events like the Midsummer Fair and Cambridge Folk Festival!

If you’re looking for a memorable vacation, Cambridge is a must-see and one of the best possible day trips from London.

Canterbury

Walking down the streets of Canterbury is like stepping into another time whilst the bells of Canterbury Cathedral ring over the crumbling ruins of St. Augustine’s Abbey, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Proud of its musical heritage, Canterbury has its own choir and monthly concerts, including an international festival in the Autumn.

If you’d like to explore history the way it was meant to be, Canterbury is the destination for you.

Brighton

For the more hands-on traveller, Brighton is well-known for its entertainment, including Churchill Square (a 40,000-meter shopping center) and the Brighton Pier, which is teeming with clubs, cafes, arcade halls, and yearly fairs and festivals. You also have your choice of beaches, theaters, pubs, galleries, and concerts.

For history buffs, Brighton is a living landmark of English culture. Its churches date back to the 11th century, its mausoleums are rich and carefully preserved, and its electric railway is the oldest in the world. Even the Royal Pavilion – one of Brighton’s most recent additions, built to accommodate King George IV – is over two centuries old.

With a little something for everyone, this city is one of the best choices for day trips from London. You’ll never be bored in Brighton!

Oxford

Who doesn’t know the University of Oxford? And yet the town offers so much more than classrooms. Forget what you’ve seen on brochures – Oxford is actually thrumming with life, full of restaurants, theaters, galleries, and tourist attractions. It has everything from an ice rink to an acclaimed brewery. Feel like shopping? There are literally dozens of corner markets and souvenir shops lining the streets.

With a world-famous reputation and attractions to match, Oxford is one of the most popular and sought-after day trips from London, regularly attracting a million visitors each year.

I’d also suggest taking a visit to Rye. It’s a gorgeous little town. It doesn’t get as much coverage as these bigger cities, but it’s 45 min out of London on the train, and its a great place to spend the day.

There are some nice walks and its got loads of great gastropubs and quaint little tea rooms and stores.

One of my favourite towns that I have been to so far!
