The Best Tourist Attractions Mauritius has to Offer

Picturesque, welcoming and diverse, the beautiful island of Mauritius despite its modest size has a wealth of tourist attractions waiting for you to discover. Lying in the Indian Ocean just off the coast of Africa, the island is part of a collection that forms the Republic of Mauritius. With a rich history stemming from its colonial past you can find a huge amount of different cultural influences here, meaning you won’t be short on things to do.

With that in mind though, you might be unsure about where to start! So if you are planning on taking a trip here, what follows are some of the best tourist attractions on offer:

Port Louis

Starting with the island’s capital, Port Louis is as the name suggests a port city, and is home to a large number of different attractions. You’ll need to give yourself several days if you want to make the most of this incredible place which wonderfully combines the modern with the old.

Enjoy the creature comforts of some of the new luxury hotels near the marina, then visit some of its famous sights like the stunning, French-influenced architecture of its older buildings, or one its many museums (the Natural History Museum is home to one of the world’s only reconstructed Dodo skeletons). Alternatively, take a walk just outside of the city limits up the majestic surrounding mountain range.

Maison Eureka (Eureka House)

Built during the 1800s this is one of the biggest mansion houses on the island. Currently functioning as a museum, you can take a tour of this gorgeous building and look at the collection of cultural items its former aristocratic owners have amassed over the centuries.

Il Aux Cerfs Island

Translated as ‘The Deer Island’, this small piece of paradise is located just off the coast of Mauritius, but is still under the main island’s ownership. This is a perfect chance to relax as you can lie on the idyllic, white sandy beaches and bask in the hot sunshine in front of an azure lagoon.

Black River Gorges National Park

For those who want to get out and about, it’s not all about the cities and beaches. The Black River Gorges National Park features a choice of hikes and walks through a variety of landscapes. Towering mountain ranges, forest-covered hillsides, rolling green meadows and a host of local wildlife and fauna are awaiting your arrival.

On top of all these there are hundreds of other amazing attractions on this fantastic island, so don’t hesitate to get your trip booked and make this your next holiday destination.

Mauritius sounds absolutely mind blowing! I really hope that one day I’ll be able to afford to fly there… Do you know if there are any plans for low cost flights from the UK planned?
