To Watch Or Not to Watch: The Royal Wedding Day Dilemma

The country is getting set to split into two broad camps this week: those who will be watching the Royal Wedding and those who won’t. Though the entire nation has been given a holiday to celebrate the marriage of Prince William and Kate Middleton with street parties and get-togethers, huge numbers of people have been voicing their indifference to the event and making other plans.

Here are a few of the best ideas being floated by both camps on how to make April 29th a day to remember, whether you’re a right royalist or a royal revolter.

Right royalist: Throw a street party

One of the most popular tactics amongst those wishing to celebrate Kate and Will’s big day with them is the traditional street party. British people have been decking out their streets in bunting and wheeling out the tables and chairs for well over a century and over 850 official street parties have been planned in London alone for this week’s royal wedding. If you fancy getting to know your neighbours and toasting Will and Kate, just post a few invites through people’s doors, make sure there’s enough room for everyone to sit down and then get ready to brew the biggest pot of tea of your life!

Royal revolter: Book a flight

If you’ve no interest in the colour of the Queen’s hat, the style of Kate Middleton’s dress or Prince Harry’s hymn singing abilities, you might want to get out of the country on Friday. The May Day bank holiday on Monday makes this weekend an ideal opportunity to book a last-minute city break in Europe or even jet off to a beach somewhere and enjoy the spring sunshine. Travelling could be busy, so make sure you book travel insurance to cover you against unexpected difficulties – for the lowest-priced deals.

Right royalist: Take a Royal Wedding cruise

If you want to mark the occasion of the Royal Wedding in a way that the whole family will enjoy, why not book a cruise along the River Thames, taking in some of London’s most famous sights while Will and Kate tie the knot? For just £18 for adults and £12, City Cruises provide full commentary as their boats take you right past Westminster Abbey and offer guests a commemorative goody bag on Royal Wedding day.

Royal revolter: Head for the hills

Believe it or not, London is unlikely to be the most beautiful part of the UK to be in on Friday April 29th. With spring in full flow, places like the Yorkshire Dales, the Highlands of Scotland, Snowdonia and the Lake District will be teeming with lush greenery, new lambs, bees, butterflies and not a Royal Wedding in sight. If you want to be as far as you can from the Royal Wedding as you can, we recommend you climb a mountain in the spring sunshine!

I’m loving the occasion and will be happily sitting at home, drinking tea and cheering on the newly weds. 🙂 Either that or sleeping in and missing the whole thing.

I think its really important to mark the occasion then looking back in 30 years you know you took part in the celebrations in one way….roll on the fine tea and cucumber sandwiches 🙂
